About Us
Women of Winnipeg (WOW) provides an opportunity for women leaders from a cross-section of fields to meet in an informal, non-partisan setting to explore and share common concerns and experiences. It provides an opportunity to hear inspiring speakers and to talk about issues of importance with women who can affect change. WOW is a non-profit group with a maximum membership of 60 women. WOW’s Mission is to provide opportunities for Winnipeg Women identified as leaders in the community, to develop personal and professional relationships, facilitating learning and growth for the benefit of its members and the community at large. The WOW membership generally meet once a month (September to June).
History
Winning Women of Winnipeg (WOW) was originally founded by Susan Thompson in 1990. It was launched as result of her participation at an annual non-partisan Women`s retreat inspired by The Right Honourable, Kim Campbell, who had hosted a National’s Women’s Retreat in Parksville, BC. In 1992 Susan Thompson was elected as the first, and to date, the only Woman Mayor of Winnipeg. With all the extra responsibilities of this critical role, WOW was put on hold. WOW held its first retreat in Gimli in 1995 and The Honourable Janice Filmon served as emcee. Since its re-invention the group has grown and continued to flourish. In 2005, Elba Haid, President of RealCare and Doris-Mae Oulten revived the group.
Community Support
In addition to the development of member relationships, the group is also committed to supporting the success of women including mentor-ship of younger women. In addition, they have strategically supported other organizations such as The Nellie McClung Foundation, Girl Rising (international initiative to educate young women) and the Westland Foundation whose focus is on higher education for inner city Winnipeg students.
Membership
Membership to the Women of Winnipeg is by invitation only. Members must open opportunities for other women and be influential in the community. We have invited only leaders who actively support or create opportunities for other Winnipeg women, demonstrate excellence, integrity and confidentiality. These are women who are committed to active participation, willing to learn for their own development, who want to talk about issues of importance and who can affect change.
